Visitor

We were watching The Possession last night.  There is a scene early on where they find a mess in the kitchen.  The dad blames it on a raccoon and screws the dog door shut.

Less than a half hour later, look what meandered past our back door.

Twice as big as Homer! Homer darling, this is why we lock you in at night.

The first time I ever saw a raccoon was when I was around 7 or 8, I think, and I heard this absolutely horrible noise coming from our backyard, at night. I got up and looked out my bedroom window, and saw this huge, hump-shaped, creature moving around. Totally looked like a monster. It was too dark for me to make out the coloring, so it wasn't until much later that I realized it had been a raccoon :-)

Freaky.
There are 3 creatures that tend to make a mess and therefore make me not like them: raccoons, squirrels, and opossums. My kids like to just *say* "possum" to freak me out. And my dear DIL knows this, too -- for fun, she took me to the animal exhibit at their university and made sure I suddenly came up on an eye-level taxidermied squirrel... basically jumping at my face from the other side of the glass. I barely forgave her.

Forgot to say, we've experienced something bad with all 3 of those critters. Perhaps "not like" is too gentle of a term?

But I still think raccoons are cute... sometimes...
