Bad Choices

Sometimes your legally adult child chooses to make a bad choice and you are powerless to prevent it.

Case in point:

This is Frank last month. Quite hirsute.


At breakfast on Monday, I noticed the sides were shaved but the chin was longer than ever. "Yes," he said, "I'm going to grow it out and braid it."

Like this?



Well, sort of. It's already far thicker than Brad Pitt's mess. Frank says he's going to have just ONE braid. OMG, at least it won't be gray.

I choose my battles with my children. As you can see from past pictures, hair has never been one of them. But this? I'm really disturbed.

At least it's not this...yet...

    I think that when kids hit a certain age, you have to give them The Freedom of the Hair. It's a temporary/harmless form of self-expression (unlike tattoos, etc.). That said, I'm sure my girls will be making some choices in their teen years to make me cringe.

    While I feel your motherly pain, I am impressed by your son's individualistic style. I wish I could move away from my tendency to always look and dress conventionally.
    And yes, I so agree about The Freedom of the Hair after a certain age.

    Oh, no. While it is true that there are far worse things that could happen, I find the long braided or twisted beard to be highly skanky.

    Other than that, your son seems like a great guy!

    When I see the latest hairy incarnation on my son I do ask if there are any women in his life...with a meaningful look. He knows my point of view (his twin sister is in close agreement) on the subject and he is also interested in having another relationship. So I expect the "grooming" will get cleaned up at some point.

    He really needs to go to a college where they have "No Shave November." He'd rock it.

    Er. Um. Yes. You need to grant (as Jenn says) Freedom of the Hair.

    As long as it's not permanent, they should be allowed to do it.

    My son has spent the last couple of years looking exactly like Jeff Daniels in "Dumb and Dumber."

    he recently cut his hair and shaved, for a job interview. He looked incredibly handsome!!
