Foreshortening

A prime example of foreshortening is Mantegna's Lamentation of Christ.



Hunter clearly demonstrates that the foreground (his butt) is much larger than it appears in real life.


So wouldn't you expect these fingers to be larger, since they are in the foreground?

    Maybe it's just me, but Mantegna's Christ almost seems to be "reverse foreshortened" (which is not likely an actual thing). Look how tiny the feet are in relation to the head. Like a baby with a beard. So peculiar.
