Looking Up: Century Plant

On a walk around town last fall, I suddenly noticed a tall tree. Where did that come from? There never was a tree there before.


Thanks to Aunt Snow (here and here), I realized it was a century plant.


It's gone now. See you in a hundred years.

What an amazing plant! I've never heard of it, but it reminds me of a Christmas cactus, blooming only once a year except the Century Plant is exponentially more patient.

Oh, yes. Lovely photos. When they are done blooming the whole mighty edifice crumbles away.
