I like the cat physics explanation. It looks to me like he fell asleep while doing cat yoga.
I watch the contortions of my snoozing cats and think, HOW CAN THAT POSSIBLY BE ANY MORE UNCOMFORTABLE?
I'm afraid that explains me as well (although I am nowhere near as limber as Homer).
That is a pretty darned clever observation of Ernest's. Love it.
