Road Trip: The Mighty Mississippi

"Tonights menu is chicken alfredo with peas. Chocolate cheese cake slices we got at a market today.  It's hot and humid as hell here. There are tons of bugs flying around the lantern. Francine should be here to protect us." Ernest must be wearing his windbreaker for bug protection. They didn't take any insect repellant.  Francine loves bugs! She gets so excited when she finds one flying in the house.

"This one bumped into Ernest and scared him." Francine would love this one.

Making up for the lack of communication the day before, I got the following text at 1:10 AM.  "Big storm just went through. Tent is not very waterproof. My orbs and sleeping bag are soaked. Nice!" His orbs? Is that a new word for the family jewels?

No, it's just an autocorrect for clothes. "My sleeping bag and pillow soaked up a ton of water. Here's the bag draining."

"Potato, salami, egg burritos this morning." All that salami is giving me mental heartburn.

"And later, crossing 'old miss."

Nothing worse than a wet sleeping bag. Hope they found a nice laundromat with a huge dryer.

It is EXTREMELY buggy on the Mississippi river this summer. In fact, it is RECORD SETTING buggy! I'm serious. They've had record numbers of May Flies (which look like giant mosquitos but don't bite) which is good for a healthy river but not so good for camping. Time to get a bug net hat if you're going to be in the upper midwest in summer.

Bugs and a leaky tent? Orbs bitten and wet? ;-)

I think salami is called for.

That is a VERY wet sleeping bag. I hope they've been able to dry out since then. I would be in a hotel.

The Mississippi is truly impressive. Kinda gives me chills to see it.

Well, I have to admit that although the river looks gorgeous, you would have a hard time making me ever camp again (after a damp and buggy childhood full of camping trips). Humanity has been trying to get under a roof with plumbing for eons, and I feel bad for your guys! They are obviously rugged, though, and calmly carrying on....

Total bummer about the wet bag and the bugs. The bugs aren't too bad up here, I think we must be the sweet spot on the map this summer!

That camping experience is what author Patrick McManus calls "A Fine and Pleasant Misery." If you aren't already familiar with them, the books are wonderfully funny.
