However, Ernest returned from this trip at 10:30 a.m. and he wasn't quite ready for lunch. He suggested we drive for a while and go to The Spot in Carpinteria. This is where his dad got burgers as a little kid and it's still there.
So the burger hit the spot for sure. And there were onion rings.
Go ahead, grab a ring. He'll share.
Yes, he looks a little tired there. 24 hours of traveling will do that. He still had enough energy to take a bike ride when he got home, although he admitted that the giant burger was perhaps not the best thing to have eaten so soon before a ride. Shh, we won't tell his coach.

It must feel lovely to have him home :) I love places like that! We have to travel to get to them around here, but back in Pa there was one right in our town!!
Yum! I try to eat all healthy-like, but sometimes? Sometimes, you just need a good burger.
He can use the calories-- he lost 10 pounds while he was gone.
I love that he chose the place his dad went to as a kid. (And sharing the onion rings isn't bad, either!)
I can hardly imagine how happy you are to have him back safely at home with you.
skinny young athlete = HUGE appetite :)
What a sweetheart. OK, that burger looks good!
My kids want In & Out as soon as they arrive from the airport, I am fascinated by their "secret" menu items!
He looks good - and tired. Must have been a great trip!
My son loves a burger when he gets done with a backpacking trip--then his body usually protests mightily after 10 days of fresh fish and backpacking rations.
That looks delish and he looks very happy to be eating it!
Wow! He's home so quick!! And he looks tired but very happy (although the burger may have something to do with that last.)
You must be so proud of him. What an amazing amount of life he is exploring!!
Glad to see he's home and happy :-)
