Early Application

For a parent of a college bound senior, I know surprisingly little about the application process.  Frank went to a community college and Ernest (you know him, my not so little mr. man) is handling the whole matter himself.

Thanks to the excellent college counseling program at Hogwarts, he has done the required self-reflection and research.  In addition to having a human counselor who actually counsels, they also use a computer program which has been very helpful.  Bossy describes something similar here.

I do know that Ernest submitted 3 early applications:  Northeastern, Drexel, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Northeastern University, in the heart of Boston just a few minutes walk from Fenway Park, is his number one choice, due to the co-op program.  On our tour last summer, we learned that they have the only Taco Bell in Boston.

Rub the Northeastern Husky's nose for good luck!

Drexel University, in Philadelphia, was also a stop on our college road trip.  Again, the co-op program is a plus.

Although Drexel's mascot is a dragon, their good luck charm is this statue's toe.

WPI was a new addition to his list, probably due to the proximity to Boston.  "WPI was founded in 1865 to create and convey the latest science and engineering knowledge in ways that are most beneficial to society."   Well, that sounds like a good fit for him.

If he gets accepted at Northeastern, he's done!  If not, he'll roll out another series of applications at the next deadline.  (Boston University for sure, plus a couple "reaches" and I don't know what else.)

Cornell is just too damn far from Boston, hmmm? Nice seeing you last summer though!

I'd choose Northeastern too - if only for the Taco Bell!

Good luck Nablopomoing! I'm gonna need it too!

Oh Gary, Ithaca is so beautiful but just a little too small for him.

At another college the rubbing-for-good-luck charm was the nose on the founder's statue. But where?

Sounds like he's got good options.

My high school senior *barely* got his early decision app turned in by the deadline. He's been handling this process mostly on his own and assured us that all he needed was final feedback from a few teachers last week on an essay. Then on Friday night he "discovered" that he needed official high school transcripts. His father & I nearly clobbered him... verbally we certainly did!

Wait - are you Northeasterners? Why did I think you were out in the Midwest somewhere?

I enjoyed going to school in Ithaca myself - it's quite crowded and busy when school is in session. Seeing it during the summer doesn't give you the full picture. Tell him to look again! They have some sort of a co-op engineering program also.
